Home of the beeches
The sourroundings of Berlin - or Germany in general - do not seem the ideal place to start searching for wild nature paradises that are able to provide experiences that compares with those of places like the west of Canada or Scandinavia. Yet, my home is not devoid of any inspiring natural features. It is the home of one of the most charismatic trees of the world, the European Beech (fagus sylvatica). I cannot get enough of these wonderful plants and luckily they populate a great variety of landscapes. The silent forests of northern Germany, interrupted by rivers and lakes; the spectacular sand stone mountains of Saxony or the wild gorges of the Bavarian Alps.
